Creating a bootable USB drive using an ISO file might sound simple enough, but it's not as easy as simply copying the file from one location to another. In fact, even burning an ISO file onto a CD or DVD is a different - albeit similar process. Fortunately, there are several free as well as premium tools that will help you accomplish the task the right way.

First of all, what are ISO files and what are they used for? An ISO image or file is a perfect representation of all the data on a DVD, CD or BD. It's not a file that Windows can open; rather, think of it like a box containing all the parts you need to make a particular product. That box and its contents are no good on their own, but are absolutely essential to assemble that product.

The uses are many, but the general purpose is to be able to distribute large programs online. The benefit is that all the program's files can be contained in one file, an ISO file. To create a bootable USB drive from an ISO file, you can use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Rufus

Method 2: Windows USB/DVD Download Tool

Method 3: ISO Mate

Method 1: Make Bootable USB from ISO with Rufus

Rufus is a free executable program that doesn't require any downloads. It is typically used to create USB installation media from a bootable ISO file you have on your system, but it can also be used for systems that don't have an OS installed.

Rufus is fast and, as mentioned, it's an executable. That means as soon as you download the .exe file and double-click on it, it runs. What it does is to first prepare the USB location, extract the ISO file's contents - including the files that make it bootable and copy it to the USB.

The biggest benefit of using Rufus is that you don't download anything. However, this prorgam only supports USB sticks.

Method 2: Create Bootable USB from ISO with Windows USB/DVD Download Tool

Another free utility is Windows USB/DVD Download Tool, which allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 or Windows 8 ISO file to a USB drive. It's only for those two versions of Windows, but since the majority of Windows users are still on Win 7, we thought it would be good to include it in our list.

You can't install Windows directly from the ISO file, which is why you need this tool to copy the required files to a USB. Use the utility to download the bootable ISO file and burn it to a USB drive or DVD. With that, you'll basically get your bootable USB drive, which you can then use to install the same Windows version on another machine.

Note: You need to format the USB drive manually before copying the bootable media to it. And most importantly, the success rate is low. If it failed, then check the Method 3 instead.

Most free software for creating bootable media is a little complicated, which is why people tend to go premium where this is concerned. That's because the software does everything for you, and you simple need to select a couple of options and the job is done. If you don't have any technical skills, then this is probably the best one to pick.
