How to Get Windows 10 For Free | Upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10

In a bid to increase Windows 10 adoption, Microsoft left a big hole in the upgrade process. It was initially thought that this option was only meant for users of accessibility tools, but Microsoft didn't apply any restrictions, which many believe was done on purpose. Despite mentioning deadlines for closing that window, the company never did. That's why it's still possible to get Windows 10 for free in 2019. You will still need your product key from your active version of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, but you won't have to pay the $119 that Microsoft is charging for a new copy of Windows 10.

How to Upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 Free Download

Step 1: Go to Microsoft download page for the Windows ISO disk image. It will ask you to accept its EULA (end user licensing agreement), after which you need to click on Upgrade This PC Now.

Step 2: If you don't want the updates that Windows suggests, just click on Not Right Now.

Step 3: You will be taken to the Ready to Install screen. If you chose to get the updates, those will be downloaded and your PC configured for the update before you reach that screen. Follow the on-screen instructions until you get to that page.

Step 4: If you have important data on your computer, select the Keep Personal Files and Apps option.

Another way to do this (for a different computer) is to use Windows Media Creation Tool, which will allow you to create a bootable USB drive so you can install Windows 10 on a different computer.

Step 1: Click on the Download Tool Now option under Create Installation Media and save Media Creation Tool to your desktop.

Step 2: Go to File Explorer and Desktop, and double-click on the .exe file for the media tool.

Step 3: When the tool opens, click on Accept at the bottom of the EULA page, then select Create installation media (USB flash drive, DVD, or ISO file) for another PC and click Next.

Step 4: In the next page, select the language, Windows 10 edition and architecture, and click Next.

Step 5: In this page, select the USB option to create the bootable media and click Next. Select your USB drive on the next screen and hit Next to create the bootable media.

Step 6: On the computer you wish to install Windows 10 on, insert the USB and boot from it. To do this, press the special key (usually F2, Del or Esc) to get to the BIOS Setup Utility and change the boot priority so the computer boots from the USB drive.

Step 7: When the boot-up resumes, it will boot to the Windows Setup page. You can then follow the instructions on each screen to set up Windows 10.

The Closing Words

These are the two ways to get Windows 10 for free in 2019. You can activate your copy using the product key for your previous version. However, even if that doesn't work for you, you can still use Windows 10. No functionalities will be missing, but you'll have a watermark reminding you to activate that copy of Windows 10.
