With the latest Windows 7/8/10, Microsoft has made it mandatory to access your computer with administrator rights or else you won't be able to perform high-end tasks such as installing software, resetting user account password, enabling safe mode or other activities that requires administrator permission. Basically, when you have the administrator rights, you will be able to run and perform any task on your computer including running the command prompt.

If by any chance you just forgot login password of Windows computer then you can activate the hidden administrator account and reset user password of other local accounts on the same computer. However, this built-in administrator account is disabled by default and you should only enable it for troubleshooting and disable it immediately afterwards for security reasons. In this guide, we will show how to enable this hidden admin account to perform advanced tasks.

Method 1: Enable Built-it Administrator Account with Command Prompt

If you have no other administrator accounts setup on your PC then Windows 7 gives you the opportunity to access your computer in Safe Mode with command prompt that will let you enter into your PC with limited permissions. We will show you how use this feature to turn on built-in administrator account.

Step 1: Turn on your PC and keep pressing F8 function key on your computer to launch Advanced Boot Option.

Step 2: Use the arrows to navigate through the options and select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and press Enter.

Step 4: Type the following command line on the command prompt window to enable the built-administrator account:

net user administrator / active: yes

Step 5: The command will be executed perfect and you may now restart the computer to enter into your PC. Here's a pictorial view of the command prompt window.

Method 2: Activate Built-in Administrator Account in Windows 7/8/10 from SAC

SAC or Super Administrator Account has all the administrator rights and especially used to perform emergency tasks when you forgot Windows password. You can even activate the built-in administrator account in Windows 7 or later versions to reset computer password. Here's how to do that:

Step 1: First, reboot your PC and press the Shift key 5 times in a row on the login screen.

Step 2: SAC should be activated and will appear on the screen. Press on it once to enter into your PC.

Step 3: Now click on "Start" and search for command prompt. Alternatively, you can press Windows + R key to open the Run application and type "CMD" to initiate the command prompt window.

Step 4: Just like the above method, copy paste the following command to activate built-in administrator account: net user administrator / active: yes

Step 5: The command will be completed successfully and you can now change the password of your computer by going to Control Panel and modify the password from the User Profile section.
